No more sleeps left

Everyone on the team has been working long hours and going over and beyond to make sure everything is in place for this event. If you have ever organized an event you know exactly what I am talking about. It’s all the little details that need to come together in the hours leading to the event.

In all the craziness, excitement and anticipation Carrie took on an additional role and that was to just say thank you, inspire us and get us there to the finish line

So even though everyone is running around today she sent a beautiful email reminding us that we were here, Connect the Dots is a mere few hours away.

So thanks Carrie for taking time for those emails. Thanks to the awesome team for putting this event together and I can’t wait for it to all begin.

See you all tonite.

Connect the dots will kick off in a few hours and if you are still undecided about whether you should stay overnight at the hotel then here’s Louise’s view on the matter.

We have a logo

Signed off on the Connect the Dots(CTD) logo today, it looks great! It classy, sheek, femine and will offer a great representation of what we are trying to pull off here.

CTD is an event for women in business brought to you by women entrepreneurs. A non-profit model, CTD will highlight and showcase women entrepreneurs from across the Ottawa region. Entrepreneurs and businesses who come on as inkind sponsors will benefit by being showcased on their skills and talents. After we have a successful launch of the event in 2009, we will have a post mortum meeting in early 2010 to work with any other women in business who come forward and would like to take part in a collaborative effort for the overall advancement of female entrepreneurship.

After meeting Carissa last month I was about to learn more about the new directiom WEC is taking and the efforts they would like to make for the advancement of women entrepreneurs. I was asked to sit on the WEB board as the Ontario representative to identify, collaborate and recruite various potential affiliate organizations that would like to participate in the Ask/Answer Campaign and contribute to the bigger picture. Since the concept fits to my core beliefs of working together as a united team and that we will have a stronger voice as a combined force I graciously accepted the offer to sit on the board. I’m excited to get to know the other networking groups from across the province. CTD will be the first step in making a difference and creatiing collaborative stand for women entrepreneurs.

Story behind the brand 2

When it came to developing a brand for Connect the Dots, I immediately asked our lead designer at Blackbird, Bronwyn Hammell, to work with me on the project. Bronwyn is young and energetic and has great vision. Her design work is always fresh and on the mark! We started working with different colours because we wanted it to be corporate but with a soft side just like the female entrepreneurs we know! Then we started playing with various ways to incorporate the dots into the logo so that it would make an impact.

Bronwyn saw a poster for the movie, In Her Shoes, with Cameron Diaz and the stylized photo in it sent us in a whole new direction. From that, we envisioned real business women being featured in the materials looking confident and successful. She suggested doing a photoshoot of real business women we knew who would be participating in Connect the Dots. I contacted Christine Tripp, a well-known female photographer and she agreed to come one board and help us with the project. We spent a fun afternoon in Christine’s studio photographing our leading business women and voila – the campaign was born!

Thanks to the very talented Bronwyn Hammell and Christine Tripp for helping to build a strong brand and identity for this event!

Story behind the brand

When Laura approached me about the idea of hosting an event that connected all women’s groups in the City, I immediately thought, “What a great idea!” She asked me to work on coming up with a name and a slogan for the event. As I started working on different ideas, the words “Connect the Dots” literally stuck in my head. I called Laura and told her that I couldn’t get “Connect the Dots” out of my head and what did she think of it as the event name? She said she loved it and from there the whole concept for the branding for the event was born.

Next came the tag line, “Bringing Women in Business Together“ and the slogan, “An event connecting leading women’s networking groups.” I really had a vision of what the event should be in terms of a downtown, business chic atmosphere that would offer women a different kind of experience and make it stand out from all the other networking events out there. Of course, it has grown into much more than I ever imagined!

Now, the incredible women who have become involved in making this event a success are an inspiration to me already and building relationships with them far outweighs the time and effort I’ve put into Connect the Dots – which is exactly how I hope everyone who attends the event will feel about the people they meet and network with at the event! Hope to see you there.

So by now, I’ve lived in Ottawa now for a little over three years and have interated well into the community. I love all the women entrepreneurs I have build relationship with and have been growing my own business steadily for the last few years. One of the ways I do that is by getting involved in the community and volunteering and attending networking events. I love getting out and meeting people from all over the city. One of the things I noticed was that I started to meet entrepreneurs from all over the region. Eventually, people started coming up to me asking me who I knew that did this type of work or that type of service. I was supprized by the amount of times people sourced me out for connections in the city when I was the new girl in town. I continued to meet amazing and talented women from all over the region, frustrated that all these women weren’t already connected, I started thinking of a way we could all come togehter in place to network, collaborate and celebrate our successes, that is when Connect the Dots was born.

idea

I asked myself; why wasn’t there an event that connected all the women from across the region, rural to urban, north south east and west, soloentrepreneur to small business. Why couldn’t all the leading networking groups in the region come together to celebrate their members, share their community building stories and connect with eachother to make the industry of female entrepreneurship more successful.

I started asking the different networks if they thought it would be a good idea, they agreed. Then I asked various entrepreneurs if they would like an opportunity to meet women from all over the region at one event, they to agreed. Green light…now for the brand.
